All governing powers of the Oklahoma Mesonet are vested in and exercised by a six-person steering committee. Each university controls interest in three seats on the committee. The committee is responsible for
- general supervision of the affairs, funds, and property of the Oklahoma Mesonet;
- establishment of organizational policies; and
- consultation whenever an activity creates significant obligations on network staff time or funds.
As a result, the steering committee also guides strategic planning, develops fund raising strategies, verifies compliance with state and federal statutes, monitors long-term risks, and assesses requests for substantial changes in operational and service activities.
